Packaging has changed a lot in the last few years. People used to mainly care about price and whether it leaked. Now customers actually look at the cup or the box. Is it paper? Can it be composted? Rules are getting tighter too. A lot of cafés, restaurants, and delivery brands are quietly switching. The ones who started early already treat it as normal business, not some special project.

food packaging trends
Here’s what’s really happening right now, and how it connects to products that already exist.

1. Compostable stuff is becoming normal

More places want packaging that can actually go into industrial composting. PLA lids and bagasse containers aren’t niche anymore. They’re showing up in regular shops because customers notice and ask for them.

2. Molded fiber is replacing old plastic trays and carriers

Those brown fiber drink carriers and trays made from recycled paper or plant fiber are everywhere now. They’re strong, hold heat pretty well, and feel a lot better than foam or hard plastic. A decent 2-cup or 4-cup molded fiber carrier works fine for coffee takeaway.

3. Paper cups are getting better coatings

Paper cups have been around forever, but the inside coating is changing. A lot of people are moving away from regular plastic lining toward plant-based PLA coating. It gives the whole cup a clearer end-of-life story. You can still print your logo on them no problem.

4. Bagasse plays a vital role

The leftover fiber from sugarcane processing can be pressed into tough bowls, plates, flip-top takeout boxes and trays. They stand up well to heat and grease, and are really sturdy. They’re one of the most practical plastic replacements we have right now, perfect for both dine-in customers and takeaway orders.

5. Cups and lids need to match

Switching the cup but keeping a normal plastic lid kind of ruins the point. PLA or CPLA lids that fit the cups make the whole set feel consistent and avoid the mixed-material headache.

6. Packaging is getting lighter and simpler

Less material, still strong enough. Single-wall and double-wall cups, plus well-designed fibre carriers, show you don’t need extra layers to get the job done. It also helps with cost and shipping.

7. Branding still works on eco-packaging

Sustainable doesn’t have to look plain. Clear printing on paper cups, ice cream cups, and kraft boxes keeps the brand visible while showing the shop is making an effort.

8. Rules are getting more specific

PFAS limits, recycling targets and extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulations are driving changes to suppliers’ product offerings. Opting for materials with verified eco credentials such as compostable bagasse, PLA and standard paper can prevent unnecessary compliance issues down the line.

9. People want straight answers

Vague “eco” or “green” labels don’t carry much weight anymore. Customers and buyers want to know what it’s made of and how to dispose of it. Clear information works better than slogans.

10. It’s easier to get everything from one source

Buying cups, lids and trays from different suppliers adds extra work for our team. Our daily work will be much easier if one supplier can provide everything: cups, lids, bagasse boxes, fiber holders, straws and eating utensils.
